7 07 2009

The United States wasn’t the only country trying to get to the moon in 1969. Astronomers from the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics discovered these files while searching through files for the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. The files date from July 19 through July 21,1969. Jim Lovell is narrating and says that “a rumor from a well-informed source in Moscow that this Luna(Soviet probe) is going to land this evening”- and return to the Soviet Union with lunar rock samples. But that probe never reached it’s goal, on July 21st, the Luna 15 crashed into the moon’s surface.
